Nester Township Population: 2000(263) 1990(225) Change(38)
Nester Township is located in the southeast corner of Roscommon County. This double-sized township, 12 X 6 square miles consists of pristine freshwater marshes, streams and over two dozen small lakes. The West Branch of the Tittabawassee River also originates here, beginning near Woods Lake. This area is one of the more secluded, lower-populated spots in Michigan, and is a haven for sportsman’s clubs and fishermen. It is bisected by north-south bound Maple Valley Rd, (Co. Rd. F-97).
This area was named after Thomas Nester, a lumber baron whose operations were known throughout eastern Roscommon and western Ogemaw Counties. He built a lumber settlement here in 1900, which became large enough to have a post office running from 1901 through 1911. |
