Roscommon County, Michigan

Roscommon County is centrally located in the lower penninsula of Michigan.

The most prominent geographical features are beautiful Higgins and Houghton Lakes, with the latter being Michigan's largest body of inland water, and the source of the Muskegon River. Both of these large and beautiful lakes are the host of various vacation and living oppourtunities for thousands of residents, visitors, and tourists each year.

This area's history is also rich with Indian tradition as it was the former home of both the Chippewa and Ottawa tribes.

Settlers from eastern Europe started to develop the land in the mid to late 1800's, during Michigan's logging boom era. This county was also the source for some of the largest White Pine forests and thus the home to loggers and their support industries.

The name Roscommon came from a sister county in Ireland and was officially adopted and organized in the year 1840.

Today, the Houghton and Higgins lakes areas are the hub of northern Michigan's summer and winter recreational activities. Houghton Lake is home to two major annual events, The Fall Fun Fest and
"Tip-up-Town (TM)", an officially registered ice shanty town with the Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce, constructed at the Lake each January.

Another highly visited attraction is the Fireman's Memorial at Roscommon, which depicts one of Michigan's heroic firefighters saving the life of a child at a fire scene.

Roscommon County is trully a year round resort area and one of Michigan's most popular recreation areas. It is easily accessed off US-27 at the M-55 exit; Just go east and you'll find the lakes. Take M-18 north, (just ten miles east on 55) to get to Roscommon.
