Lincoln Township, Michigan
49677
 |
Lincoln Township is located in the southwestern section of Osceola County. Founded March, 1867, the land then was heavily wooded to the extent that government surveyors wrote it was impassable and had poor soil.
The rich timber resources were harvested and development was helped by the coming of the railroad. There were stops at Ashton, Melton Junction and Orono.
The community of Ashton still remains, located on Mackinaw Trail.
The area is watered by the Hersey River, Lincoln Creek and their tributaries.
This township is also known for being the home of the Rev. George Bernard, author of the famous hymn: "The Old Rugged Cross." A large cross on the west side of Mackinaw Trail marks the spot where Bernard lived. |
