Maple Valley - Backus Township Population: 2000() 1990() Change()

Backus Township is located in the near southeast section of Roscommon County. It is bisected by M-55, which runs east-westbound. Once relatively secluded and rural , this township is fast becoming a popular residential area due to its location on the outskirts of the greater Houghton Lake area, only about three miles away. Two scenic places include Denton Creek Pond, on Crooked Road off of 55 to the south, and Backus Lake, the southern end of which is visible from 55 to the north just east of Crooked Rd. (A pull-off from the highway is available for fishing and boat access).

This area began as a lumbering community around 1907. It was situated along Cameron Creek and became known as Maple Valley. It was located at what is now the intersection of Old M-55 and Maple Valley Road.
