Au Sable Township Population: 2000(281) 1990(231) Change(50)
Au Sable Township is located in the northeast corner of Roscommon County. This township was named for its location at the headwaters of the Au Sable River. The south branch of the Au Sable River originates here in a low-lying area of freshwater marshes and pine forests. The river can be best viewed from either Sherman Bridge on Keno Road, or, if youre more into backwoods trekking, off of Pine Dr., a gravel road off of F-97, going east.
This area is also known as "Kirtlands Warbler Country" where a rare species of warbler chooses to nest only here, in the unique gravel and scrub pine ecology found in this part of the world. This township is also the home of Kirtland Community College, serving the greater Roscommon, Ogemaw, Crawford and Oscoda Counties area. It is located at the junction of Co. Roads F-97 and 603. |
