UPbeat Photos of the Grotto
Grotto:
- The Grotto on the grounds of the Catholic church in Stephenson.
- Father Albert Trellis, a Frenchman who served as a chaplain in World War II built the Grotto using his car and trailer to haul stones from nearby farms.
- The Grotto was modeled after the one in Lourdes, France, and completed in l943.
- The statue of St. Bernadette praying at the Grotto on the grounds of Precious Blood Catholic Church in Stephenson.
- After the surrender of the Japanese army more than 400 people gathered at the Grotto to give thanks for the end of the war.
- The Mass celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on August l5 is held at the Grotto each year. The area has also been the setting for special services, devotions, pilgramages and weddings through the years.
