UPbeat News 9/24/1999

9/24 - Four trucks and 12 volunteers from the Stephenson Fire Dept. responded to a call to the Brian McGivern property just south of the intersection of G12 and Highway 577 at 11:15 a.m. There was considerable damage to the McGivern's trailer house but no injuries were reported.

9/23 - First day of fall. All summer we looked down and enjoyed the flowers in planters and along curbs in our small towns Now, after the first frosts, it's time to start looking up to enjoy the annual show as the leaves on hardwood trees are turning to red and gold.

9/23 - Three to five year olds gathered at the library in Stephenson at l0 this morning for the twice weekly Story Hour. Pat Shulman , a library employee with a background of teaching and working with children, was in charge. Mothers and siblings are welcome. Today Mark Cappaert came with his brother Connor and their mom, Lisa. It was Mark's lst birthday and Lisa said he started the day with a donut with a birthday candle in it and would have a regular party on Sat.

9/23 - The Red Cross bloodmobile was at the Commons area of the high school today. The twice yearly visits are sponsored b the high school student council members. Elicia Majkrzak and Abbey Ruleau manned the registsration desk and reporsted that 42 people had pre-registered as donors but by noon 50 donors had checked in. The goal for the day was to collect 65 pints of blood.

9/23 - Betty Hancheck, Carolyn Fiegerle, Shirley Wetthun, Belva Olson, Doris Ross, Jane Newlin, Evie Towle, Maian Verbisky and Joyce Klatt were winners in drawings for fall centerpieces made by Phyllis Krumbein of Stephenson. The occasion was the fall kick-off meeting of the Menominee County Homemakers group, which has about l00 members representing 7 Homemakers clubs.

9/2l - The Stephenson Volunteer Fire Dept. answered a call to a fire at an old building (once was a gas station) across from Camp Shakey on Gl2. The building has been unoccupied for many years and was a total loss.

9/20 - Signe Johnson celebrated her 96th birthday . Stella Wetthun says her mom is active and independent. After making 25 afghans in l2 years she had to give it up because of arthritis. She likes doing Word Search puzzles and still balances her own checkbook.

9/20 - The Stephenson High School Board of Education met in the school library. Auditor Del Henquinet reviewed his 46-page report on the district's financial condition, concluding that the district is in good shape even though the food service and athletic departments lost money. Henquinet commended Jackie Miller, Business Manager, for "doing a good job bringing the school into the next century." A recommendation to hire Joan Borst as Special Ed teacher, Donna Starz ynski as Title 1 teacher and Karen Kovach as Social Studies/English teacher was approved by the Board.

9/20 - Directors of the Stephenson St. Vincent de Paul council metbriefly at the Center in the basement of the CCD building at the Catholic church. They have been operating a distribution and recycling center there for l3 year.

9/l8 - Cecelia Parrett died at the age of l03. She is remembered by many as a favorite teacher in the days of the one-room schoolhouses in the area.
