South Lyon is situated at the extreme southwest corner of Oakland County in Lyon Township. First referred to as Thompsons Corners, this city began in 1832 when the first house was built by the widow Thompson, whose son opened a store there. That same year, the Michigan Legislature named the surrounding township after Lucius Lyon, one of its members. Today, the town retains much of its historical look including the preservation of the old hotel, as well as First Presbyterian Church, which is on the Historical register.
