Manistique, Michigan

49854

Manistique, MichiganHenry Schoolcraft founded this village in 1871. He named it after the Ojibawa name for the Monistique ( meaning vemillion) River. When the name was registered with the state a spelling error was made and he let it stand. On March 17, 1873, William M. Colwell became the first postmaster. At that time the station was named Epsport, but was changed to Manistique on January 27, 1879. The station was on the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railroad.

This settlement was incorporated as a village in 1885 and as a city in 1901.
