Lakewood - Rockport
Alpena Township is located on Michiganís northeastern Lake Huron coastline and includes the city of Alpena. It is bordered on the south by Devils Lake and on the north by the small coastal communities of Lakewood and Rockport , situated next to beautiful Long Lake, a large inland lake just one mile from Lake Huron. Itís scenic coastline includes the peninsula jutting out into Lake Huron that forms Thunder Bay, which is at the mouth of the Thunder Bay River, one of Michiganís premiere fishing spots. It also includes several islands off the coastline which are popular boating spots, including Thunder Bay Island, where a Coast Guard Station is located.
The township was named after the County, from the Indian name meaning "partridge," suggested by Henry Schoolcraft, Michigan explorer and statesman, who observed a lot of these birds when he visited the area.
