Alpena County, Michigan

Alpena County is a superior resort area, with excellent accommodations on the pristine waters of Lake Huron and the Thunder Alpena River. Eighty shipwrecks lie on the bottom of Thunder Alpena Underwater Preserve, a popular scuba diving area. Ice fishing at the Fletcher Floodwaters is also a popular sport.

A unique feature of the land includes 150ft. wide sink holes, a geological wonder which occur at very few places in the world. Stone and copper tools dating back to 1500 B.C. have also been found in the area. Small burial mounds are located on the banks of the Devil and Thunder Alpena Rivers.

The city of Alpena is the county seat and is the largest industrial city and port with products including limestone, cement paperboard and machinery...Farm products include winter wheat, oats, potatoes, hay strawberries, dairying and cattle-raising.
