Houghton Lake, Michigan48629

Photos courtesy of: Ken Huisjen | Houghton Lake is Michigan's largest inland Lake. It is located in southwestern Roscommon County, just northeast of the intersection of US-27 and M-55. It is primarily a shallow, marshy lake, known to be no deeper than 30 feet. It is also the origin of the Muskegon River. The River can be easily seen on Business 27, just a few miles north of M-55, just east of the freeway. This lake covers the span of four townships: - Lake Township - Roscommon Township - Markey Township - Denton Township
The lake was named after the first state geologist in Michigan, Douglas Houghton, who explored the area around 1852. The community began developing around the lake during the lumbering days, with mill owner S.C. Hall, who built a settlement there in 1873.
