The area now known as Coloma was originally named Dickerville because of
bartering done by area business men. Later, Stephen Gilson platted the
village and named it Coloma, after his native home town in California.
Mr. Gilson built the first house in the area in 1834, after coming from
New York. Coloma has prospered since the days of Stephen Gilson. Tourism has played a large part in that growth. The area is a favorite to boaters and fisherman with Lake Michigan only a few miles away and public access to Big Paw Paw Lake available. Parents also bring their children from around the region to feed the deer at the ever popular Deer Forest. Coloma has not only prospered because of tourism but because of the city's active involvement in such ventures as the Coloma/Watervliet Area Economic Development Corporation (CWAEDC). This program was formed in 1989 to service the economic development needs of five local governments of which Coloma is included. Whether your needs are business or pleasure, Coloma has something waiting for you.
