Rock River Township Population: 2000() 1990() Change()
Rock River Township is located in central Alger County in Michigan’s upper peninsula, about ten miles west of Munising. Its main community is Chatham, where the township hall is located. This is a rural, scenic area consisting of freshwater streams and marshes. Its main feature is the Au Train River, whose dams have made for great recreational boating and fishing. (One dam located along M-94 east of Chatham, has camping and picnic facilities available nearby. ) The township is also adjacent to the Hiawatha National Forest to the east and the Laughing Whitefish Falls State Park a few miles west.
This area was first developed in the late 1890’s under the direction of the Cleveland Cliff’s Mining Company. A lumber camp was also set up at Chatham, which led to the development of a State Agricultural Experiment station. The camp folded up around 1899, but the station remained on and still functions today under the auspices of Michigan State University. It can be seen at the corner of M-94 and M-67.
