Osceola Township Osceola County, Michigan

Osceola Township Osceola County, Michigan
Osceola Township is located in central, southeastern Osceola County. Its largest community is Evart , with the northern half of the city located in the township.

A unique feature of this area are clusters of artesian wells that form the beginnings of small streams. The Muskegon River also flows through this township, and many of the wells can be seen from the Muskegon when canoeing it, especially north of Evart.

This township was first settled in 1859 by Samuel Fitsgerald. It was named after the famous Seminole Indian Chief Osceola, who fought the US successfully in the 2nd Seminole Indian War in 1826.

Osceola was deceived by being taken captive under a flag of truce and imprisoned by a Col. Jesup. He died in prison shortly afterwards witch resulted in a protest by the people where many cities, townships and counties were named after Osceola.
