Mikado is located on Van Etten Creek in Mikado Township in southeastern Alcona County.

Like so many in the area, this town originated during the lumbering days of the late 1800s. It started when Daniel L. Bruce built a hotel here in 1886, which eventually attracted the Detriot & Mackinaw Railroad to build a station.

Unlike many other towns in the area that disappeared after the lumbering was over, however, Mikado has survived the years due to its location to the many tourist attractions nearby, including the Pine River, Huron National Forest, Kirtlands Warbler nesting area and Lake Huron, just 5 miles away.
