Haynes Township Population: 2000(724) 1990(549) Change(175)
Haynes Township is located on the eastern border of Alcona County along the Lake Huron coastline. This is a primarily rural area, with the small community of Alcona, located to the north, along the lake. The most prominent feature of the township is the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse, built in 1870. This lighthouse has played an important role in nautical history, with its former life-saving crew rescuing hundreds of passengers of ships over the years that have sunk in the treacherous waters in that section of the Big Lake. A large rudder from the wreckage of the Marine City that went down August 27, 1880, can be seen in the lighthouse yard. 101 of 121 passengers were rescued from that vessel by the lighthouse crew. |
