Hawes Township is located in central Alcona County. This double-sized township containing 72 square miles touches the southern tip of Hubbard Lake on its northern boundary. It includes Backus Beach and Mount Moriah, where you can get a birds-eye view of this second largest inland lake in Michigan. Barton City is contained on the township’s south side, along Jewell Lake, another popular resort and fishing spot. The village of Lincoln can be found in the township’s southeast corner.
Hawes Township was named after Hawes, an old lumbering town that existed briefely from 1899-1908, due to the expansion of the Detroit & Mackinac Railroad there. Barton City was also an old lumbering town, named after an early settler, Frank Barton. It received a post office in 1912 and managed to survive because of its support from the summer resort community situated around Jewell Lake. |
