Centerville Township Population: 2000(1095) 1990(836) Change(259)
Centerville Township is located in central Leelanau County. Its eastern boundary is Lake Leelanau, a 15-mile-wide lake traversing much of the County north and south. Its northern boundary is Lake Michigan. This is a scenic hilly area, dotted by farms and forests to the east of the lake. A public beach can be found at the Township Park on Co. Road #643 which runs along the lake, just north of the junction at Eitzen Road. There are also some high spots along #643 that provide a panoramic view of the lake.
This area was first settled in the late 1800s when the lumbering boom was getting off the ground. Several small towns originated then, including Schomberg, Bodus and Isadore. Schomberg began where the Michigan and N. E. Railroad put a station; a post office opened in 1904 , closing in 1934. Bodus also began in 1904, but the post office closed that same year. Isadore, named after St. Isadore, the patron saint of farmers, was founded in 1870 by Polish immigrants moving here from Milwaukee to farm the land; a post office opened in 1892, closing in 1912. |
