Marquette County is located along the southern shores of Lake
Superior in Michigan’s central Upper Peninsula. It is Michigan’s largest
county in geographical size, covering 1841 square miles. It was named after
Father Marquette, the famous Jesuit missionary who came here during the late
1600’s. The terrain varies from flat and swampy to a rocky mountain range in
the north, filled with iron ore, discovered early by fur traders and which
helped supply the Union during the Civil War.
