Baraga County was named after Father Frederic Baraga. He was the Bishop of northern Michigan in 1853, with his headquarters in Sault Saint Marie. Father Baraga built a Roman Catholic Mission at Assinins where he spent 10 years educating Indians in their native tongue. |
