Wolverine is located in southwestern Cheboygan County, about a mile west of I-75, and 35 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge. It is situated on the Sturgeon River, and is a popular fishing spot. It has several stores and restaurants, with quite number of resorts, motels and cabins in the immediate surrounding area.
This area began to grow during the early 1880s during the lumber boom. The Michigan Central Railroad came to the area and built a station in 1881. Subsequently, a post office was opened , with George D. Richards as the first postmaster. It was named after the state animal, which was abundant in the region at that time. The old Depot still remains and can be seen on the west side of the river, just south of the park.
