Westphalia is located in western Clinton County about ten miles southwest of St. Johns. This town was started by a group of Roman Catholic settlers from Westphalia, Germany in 1836, led by Rev. Anton Kopp, who were advised at Detroit to settle in the Grand River Valley. Finding the best land deal here, they registered 560 acres on this site and began a settlement.
Today many descendants of this original group still live here, with an active church and parochial school community centered around St. Marys Parish to the north of town. It functions primarily as an agricultural community, with support from small business and commuter residents who work in the Lansing area. |
