The city of Wayne was named in honor of General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, who defeated the Indians in 1794, forcing the British out of what is now southeastern Michigan. In 1836, Rufus Brown and Colonel Joshua Howard bought land in this area and laid out a plat because they expected a railroad to be built through it.
"People, Pride and Progress" is engraved on Wayne's seal, and Wayne is living up to its motto. Its citizens help by their willingness to volunteer for improvement programs ranging from the Rouge Rescue Program to the Adopt-A-Park Program. Citizens describe Wayne as "a great place to live and work."
