Vicksburg is situated about three miles south of Portage in Kalamazoo County. Its picturesque setting on Sunset Lake along with the turn-of-the-century buildings downtown make for a relaxing atmosphere, and a nice diversion for shopping or an afternoon stroll. It is supported primarily by small business and a few production facilities, including paper manufacturing. A park along the lake can be found on the west side of town. An old railroad depot, now an active historical society, can also be seen in the north side of town on 24th Street - complete with some old railroad cars.
Vicksburg was named after settler John Vickers, who came to the area in 1831 and built a grist mill on the falls on Portage Creek. After going through several name changes, (including, Holland, Lincoln and Brady, after the township and General Hugh Brady, commander of the US Army at Detroit), the issue was settled in 1871 when it was incorporated as a village.
