Vermontville is located in western Eaton County at the junction of Ionia Rd. and the Vermontville Highway. This is a small, agricultural community also supported by local business and some small industry, including electronic parts manufacturing. It is best known for its annual Maple Syrup Festival, generally celebrated in the last weekend in April. Then one can experience a bit of old New England with a plate of hot pancakes, and enjoy the historical atmosphere, accented by the many well-preserved Eastern American style buildings.
Vermontville was settled in 1836 by Rev. Sylvester
Cochrane, a circuit preacher from Vermont who organized a Congregationalist settlement from there to this area. The town was organized a year later, with Oren Dickenson as the first supervisor. It received a post office in 1840 and eventually was organized as a village in 1871.
