In 1849, Townsend North and James M. Edmunds founded a settlement on the Cass River, which they named after Edmund's uncle, Matthew Vassar, who later founded Vassar College in New York. North's home in Vassar is one of seven Tuscola sites in the National Register of Historic Places. Vassar is located in the southwest portion of Tuscola County. Nearby is the Vassar State Game Area with hundreds of acres of natural woodlands. The Vassar Fair is held in July.
