In 1848-49, Stephen Bogue and Charles P. Ball built a gristmill on this settlement in Penn Township. The same men laid it out in 1851. On July 8, 1850, Theron J. Wilcox became the colony's first postmaster. Asa Kingsbury was its first merchant. It was given a station when the Michigan Central Railroad came through here in 1871. This village was incorporated in 1875.
