Three Rivers is located in the west-central section of St. Joseph County. This community started in the early 1830s and acquired the name of Three Rivers in 1840 after a few previous unsuccessful attempts at other names, including St. Joseph, Moab and Lockport. It was named "Three Rivers" by then landowner, John H. Bowman, because of the confluence of the St. Joseph, Portage and Rocky Rivers at that point.
In 1895, it was incorporated into a city. Since then, it has experienced significant and diverse economic growth. At one time it was a major location for the fur industry. Today it includes a good portion of auto-related manufacturing. Despite its growth, however, Three Rivers also retains its historical look, with much of the downtown area on the National Historical Register, complete with its turn-of-the-century buildings and the Silliman House on the St. Joseph River, established in 1876 and currently a Museum operated by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. | If you have any comments or suggestions, please take a minute to write using our contact form.
