Sturgis is located in southeastern St. Joseph County at the intersection of US-12 and M-66. It was named after Judge John Sturgis who moved there from Monroe in 1828 and built a log cabin. This city has a lot of history, including being the first town to welcome the first Michigan Southern Steam Locomotive in 1851. This town successfully developed in large part because of the water power available from the St. Joseph River. It eventually organized as a city in 1895.

Today, Sturgis is the largest town in the county and remains an economically strong community with diverse businesses including: plastics injection molding, auto-parts manufacturing, tool and die, hospital dietary products, metal fabrication - just to mention a few. It also is situated in the middle of a popular tourist area that features the "River Country" of St. Joseph County.
