Sterling, Michigan48659

Photos courtesy of: Ken Huisjen | Sterling is located in western Arenac County. Like so many other communities in Michigan, this town began as a result of a sawmill established. The firm of Norn & Kent built one here in 1871, with a station assigned by the Michigan Central Railroad a year later. The town was named for a local lumberman, William C. Sterling, that same year.
Today, Sterling remains a small rural community, with several small businesses, stores, a park and a local elementary school. The Detroit & Mackinaw Railroad still runs through town, complete with an old fashioned banjo signal at the crossing by the elevator, still in operation.
