South Rockwood, Michigan48179

Photos courtesy of: Ken Huisjen | South Rockwood is located on I-75 in the extreme northeast corner of Monroe County. It is situated along the mouth of the Huron River, about five miles inland from the Lake Erie coastline. This is a small bedroom community to the greater Detroit metro area to the north, consisting mainly of residential areas with a few locally owned businesses. It borders the Point Mouillee State Game Area, which lies to the east; a shallow, marshy area along the coast - great for boating, fishing and waterfowl. Several marinas can be found along the river there.
South Rockwood was founded in 1863 by John Strong, who came from Canada, naming it after his home town in Ontario. A post office was opened in 1877. It was eventually incorporated as a village in 1955. |
