River Rouge, Michigan48218

| In the 1700's some French families from Detroit bought land from the Indians just below the River Rouge and began to farm. On February 19, 1891 this colony was given a post office as River Rouge. Henry Visger was its first president, when the village was incorporated in 1899. In 1922 the village was incorporated into a city.
The City of River Rouge is located south of the City of Detroit and takes its name from the Rouge River which flows along its northern border into the Detroit River. It was one of the first communities to become industrialized which stemmed from its unique location to early water transportation and later the railroad. The City is completely developed in industrial and residential uses with commercial activity confined mainly to West Jefferson Avenue. |
