New Lothrop is located in the very northeastern corner of Shiawassee County. This is a small agricultural community with its own elementary school and village form of government. It is supported by small businesses, stores and some small manufacturing facilities.

New Lothrop was founded in 1836 by men who owned the four corners there: Gideon Silverton, A. W. Gillette, Warren Williams and Nathan Colby. It was named after William Lothrop who donated the bells for the Methodist Church. It remained under the jurisdiction of Hazelton Township until 1957 when it was incorporated as a village.
