Nashville was named after George Nash, the chief engineer of the Michigan Central Railroad in 1866. Since the railroad was building a line through the area and needed to set up stations, it had an interest in promoting communities. Consequently, Nash offered to officially plat and register the town when it was doing the same for the railroad property there. The first settlers of the town, father and son Robert and George Gregg, recommended Nashs name. The town was officially incorporated as a village in 1869, the year the first train came.

Nashville is located on the eastern border of Barry County at Eaton County. It is situated on the Thornapple River, near the junction of M-66 and M-79. It derives its economic support from local stores, small businesses and from its location as a commuter town halfway between the greater Grand Rapids and Lansing areas.
