Mio, Michigan48647

Photos courtesy of: K. Huisjen | Mio lies at the junction of M-72 and M-33, two miles south of the center of Oscoda County. It is situated on the Au Sable River, near the Mio Dam (a scenic lookout over the pond can be accessed just north off 72 about a mile east of town). This is the heart of Kirtlands Warbler country, and many bird watchers come from all over the world to see this rare species which exists only in this area. The county seat is located here, and taxidermy specimens of the bird can be seen at the courthouse. Mio is also a popular canoeing and fishing spot, with several access points along the river - as well as hiking trails, two-tracks and snowmobile paths. Several sporting goods stores, bait shops and small resorts make this area an ideal starting point for recreational activity.
Mio was founded in 1881 by Coolige Comins, John Randall, Reirlo Fosdick and Henry Deyarmond. A post office, with Randall as the first postmaster, was opened in 1882 under the name "Mioe," after Deyarmonds wife. The name was shortened to Mio a year later.
