Lake City is named after beautiful Lake Missaukee, and is situated on the lake's eastern side. It is the largest town in the county and the county seat for Missaukee County Many tourists, boaters and seasonal cottagers travel here during the summer months to enjoy the lake, which frequently seems to change hues and colors, depending on the angle of the sun. It can be enjoyed from almost anywhere, but especially from the beach along M-55 as well as the county park just northwest of town. Lake City was founded in 1868 by Daniel Reeder, who built the first log cabin there. At that time, the town's name was Reeder, with the lake called: Muskrat Lake. In 1872, Lake City became the county seat by only a one vote margin against Falmouth. It was renamed Lake City in 1877 during the lumber boom, when the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad built a line through there. It was incorporated into a village in 1889 and later as a city in 1932.
