Gladstone is located in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan in Delta County on a small peninsula jutting out from the west coastline of Little Bay De Noc. Easily accessed off of US-2, about 7 miles north of Escanaba, This town is a popular summer tourist attraction for shopping, boating, fishing and picnicking. It has a waterfront park and marina, and contains a variety of unique shops and restaurants in its business district.
Gladstone was first named Minnewasca, Sioux for "White Water," in 1887. At that time William D. Washburn, a developer for the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railroad ran a flour milling operation there. Since the railroad was partially funded by British capital, he sought successfully to rename the town for the then British Prime Minister, William Gladstone. It was incorporated as a village that same year, reincorporated as a city two years later.
