This Delta County village got its name because of the fertility of the soil, the adjoining bay Garden Bay, and the village, which followed, Garden. The first settler, Philomen Thompson, built his cabin here in 1850. Most of the early settlers were of French origin. The settlement was also know as Haley's Bay, or a Garden Bay. It was given a post office as Garden on September 7, 1865, with Asel Y. Bailey as its first postmaster. The office was closed on January 30, 1871, but was restored from September 20, 1872 to April 27, 1874.
Garden was incorporated as a village in 1886.
