Dundee is located in western
Monroe County, at the junction of US-23 and M-50. Its economy is supported primarily by travelers through it, as well as by small business and manufacturing. The downtown area, consisting of many unique, small shops and stores, is a popular visiting spot, contained in a triangle of old but well-preserved buildings, surrounding a town "square" that includes an old tile covered gazebo. The first settler to this area was William Remmington, who came here in 1823. A year later, Riley Ingersoll mover here from New York State. In 1830, S.Van Ness moved here and built a mill, and the area became unofficially known as Van Ness Mills. As the town grew, it went through some more name changes, including Winfield, after a post office just to the east. In 1836, Scottsman Alonzo Curtis became the second postmaster and decided to move the post office to the town, renaming it Dundee, after his ancestors village in Scotland. That name stuck and it eventually was incorporated as a village in 1855. The River Raisin runs just to the south of the main intersection, which includes a dam and the Old Mill (1840s Greek Revival grist mill and 1940s Ford Village Industry), which now houses a History Museum open 12 to 4 Friday through Monday, Community Center and the Village Council Chambers.
