Dexter is located in western
Washtenaw County,
about 6 miles northwest of Ann Arbor, with easy access to I-94 just a
few miles south. It is supported by a diverse economy and its location
as a commuter town to Ann Arbor. It has an active rail line and is
bordered by the Huron River Metro Parkway system to the north. A dam on
Mill Creek a block south of its historic downtown circle adds a
picturesque touch to this well-preserved area. Dexter was named after Judge Samuel Dexter, who purchased the first land here in 1824. Shortly afterwards, a Dr. Cyril Nichols and Samuel Foster settled here, adding some permanence to the community. Two years later, Judge Dexter became the first postmaster. The town’s land was officially platted in 1830 and was eventually incorporated as a village in 1855.
