Decatur is located in southern Van Buren County on M-51, six miles south of I-94 and about three miles from the Cass County line. This town has a diverse economic base which includes agriculture and manufacturing. Its close proximity to larger metro areas also lends significantly to its economic support.
Decatur was first settled by New York residents Samuel Sherwood and Joseph D. Beers in 1847, with Sherwood becoming the first postmaster in 1848. It was incorporated as a village by the state legislature in 1861, named after the naval hero, Stephen Decatur, commander of a two-masted ship in 1804 during the War of Tripoli, whose crew captured and burned several enemy ships.
Decatur has also been known as the home of Edgar Bergen, famous radio ventriloquist and early TV star of the 1940s. Some of his memorabilia can still be seen in one local restaurant, called the "Hard Times Family Restaurant".
