George and Henry Niver built a sawmill here in 1848. The town became known as Niverville. An old neighbor of the Nivers, William Peter, came from Columbia County, New York to work for them. He came into possession of their entire property and his business interests built up the village. The name Columbiaville was suggested by the Nivers. The William Peter Mansion is a historic site in Columbiaville, which is located on the Flint River.
