|
Clinton was named after DeWitt Clinton, originator of the Erie Canal in New York State, which many settlers coming to Michigan used to get here. The first settlers to the area included John Terrill, Thaddeus Clark and Horatio Baldwin, who came here in 1830. It was incorporated as a village in 1837 with a census then of already 925. It eventually received a station of the Michigan Southern Railroad in 1878. The first permanent settler was Alpheus Kies, who was born in Woodstock, Connecticut. Kies came here with his family in 1829. He built a log cabin at the northwest corner of Tecumseh St and US-12 where the Clinton Inn is now located.
