in 1830, Linux Jacox, a squatter from New York State, built the first
home, a cedar-pole shanty in that town. In 1832 the second house and a
sawmill was built by Butler Holcomb. In 1840 the village was platted and
named by Clark brothers, Jeremiah, Nelson W., and Milton H.
