Burton is a major southeastern suburb of the greater Flint area in Genesee County. It is primarily a residential community with several shopping plazas along major routes, including the Dort Highway. The City Complex, located on Center Road between Bristol and Maple, contains the post office, City Hall, the police station and court building. It also includes a stately, flag-lined veterans' memorial in the center.

Burton’s recorded history goes back to 1861 when the town grew large enough to have a post office assigned, with Horace L. Donaldson as the first postmaster.
