Breedsville is located in central Van Buren County at the junction of County Roads 380 and 215 in Columbia Township.

This is an off-the-beaten-path community that has retained its small-town charm over the years.

It contains a few stores and small businesses. Situated on the South Branch of the Black River, it’s main feature includes a dam where you will frequently find some very serious fishing going on, whether it be Steelhead in the spring or Salmon in the fall.

You can enjoy the dam and river from a park just on the south side of the main junction.

Breedsville was named after Silas Breed, who came here with a group of settlers from New York in 1835. They came after Jonathon Hinkley and Barnard Howard visited here previously that year, looking for an area to harvest lumber. Breed built a sawmill here and the town was born. It was incorporated as a village in 1883.
