|
Bear Lake is located in northwestern Manistee County on the borders of Bear Lake and Pleasanton Townships. This area was first settled by Russell Smith in 1863. Named for the bear-shape of the lake it is situated on, this town was officially given a post office in 1865. Smith sold the land to George and David Hopkins in 1874, who were instrumental in developing business in the town. It eventually incorporated into a village in 1893.
