Ann Arbor, Michigan

Ann Arbor, the Washtenaw County Seat, is located in southeastern Michigan at the junction of US-23 and I- 94. Home of the University of Michigan and the U. of M. Medical Center, this city contributes significantly to Michigans culture in the areas of health care, medical research and technology. Its diverse economy includes everything from pharmaceuticals, electronic components and publishing to auto production, food processing, metal and plastics manufacturing.

Ann Arbor was first settled in 1823 by John Allen and Walker Rumsey, who came here from Virginia and New York. They named the area after their wives, both of whom had the first name of Ann, and after the many natural groves and arbors they found in the area. Allen became the first postmaster in 1824, with incorporation as a village occurring in 1833. In 1851, it was reincorporated as a city.
