Charles H. Beach became the first settler in 1854 and the place became know as Beach's Corners. Later Akron was named after its township, which had been named by Mrs. Jane Cook, after Akron, Ohio.

It became a station on the Saginaw, Tuscola & Huron Railroad in 1882.

Akron is located just 25 miles east of Bay City and is a short drive from Saginaw.
